Letter to Sophomore Advisers

Thank you very much for agreeing to advise sophomores as they consider their academic programs and other activities.

Like freshman year, sophomore year is a time for exploration. Unlike freshman year, however, it is also the year in which most students must decide on a major. Sophomores’ explorations should begin to focus on the academic choices and prerequisites for their probable majors.

Some sophomores, of course, have already selected a major, particularly if they are in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering; some have one or two possible majors in mind; many are very uncertain about their choice of major and worry about making a decision. A typical sophomore wavers between indecision and decision. For this student, the listening ear and thoughtful advice of an interested and supportive faculty member can be especially important.

This web site was created for sophomores in consultation with the Sophomore Class Council of the Yale College Council. I hope that you will find information throughout the site that is useful to you in advising.

Thank you again for agreeing to be a faculty adviser for sophomores.

Sincerely,

Risa Sodi

Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Advising and Special Programs, Yale College Dean’s Office
