ST. MARTIN DE PORRES ACADEMY Volunteers needed
St. Martin de Porres is a faith-based middle school in New Haven that provides tuition-free, extended day eductation for underserved children from low income families. They have a need for adult volunteers in a variety of roles: as tutors either for middle schoolers or for high schoolers (one day a week, after 3 pm); as “coaches” for their Americorps volunteer teachers; as athletic coaches; or to help out with office and administrative work. They also have a current need for experience in architecture or redevelopment. Contact: Allison Rivera, President, 203 772-2424 info@saintmartinacademy.org
READ TO A CHILD http://www.readtoachild.org A lunchtime reading program at the Wexler-Grant School
The mission of Read to a Child is to increase children’s success in reading and in life by inspiring adults to read to them regularly.Their lunchtime reading program partners adults with students grades 1-4 for rewarding experiences. This year they have launched a program at Wexler-Grant.
Volunteers are asked to meet once a week or every other week with the students they are paired with. Tailored to working people, the schedule is flexible and well-suited to share the volunteering with a colleague from your office. We could also utilize individual tutors and mentors as needs arise. For this and other volunteer opportunities, contact: Julie Greenwood Julie@squashhaven.org
NEW HAVEN READS http://newhavenreads.org
New Haven Reads, founded to “share the joy and power of reading,” increases the literacy skills of children to empower their academic success by providing individually tailored one-on-one after-school tutoring, educational family support, and a community book bank, all at no cost to participants.
New Haven Reads provides after-school tutoring at their three sites: at Bristol Street, Ashmun Street, and Science Park, all near the Yale Campus. Volunteers are asked to give an hour a week for a period of time to provide continuity for the kids, but the rewards are great.
