Students interested in certain spring-term Music Department courses are advised to review the music theory placement exam schedule, below. The lineup of introductory music courses has changed somewhat since last year, and this sheet also clarifies which courses do and do not require the placement test.


MUSIC THEORY COURSES WITH NO PREREQUISITES (students don’t need to take the placement exam to enroll in these courses.)

MUSI 100, Melody, Rhythm, and Notation in Global Context (new 1.5 credit course)

Covers the fundamentals of musical language (notation, rhythm, scales, keys, melodies, and chords though immersion in selected singing practices from Eurasia, North America, and Africa. Students will sing together every day; emphasis in this course will be on confident, fluent singing rather than on the finer points of artistry. Intended for students who have no music reading ability. Equivalent to MUSI 110 + 218.

MUSI 110, Introduction to the Elements of Music

A survey of the fundamentals of musical language (notation, rhythm, scales, keys, melodies, and chords), including writing, analysis, singing, and dictation. Intended for students who have no music reading ability.

MUSIC THEORY COURSES WITH PREREQUISITES (students who haven’t met the prerequisites must take the placement exam.)

MUSI 210, Elementary Studies in Analysis & Composition I

Practical investigation of the basic principles of tonal harmony, counterpoint, and composition through exercises in analysis, motivic development, phrase rhythm, texture, form, performance, and model composition. Recommended to be taken concurrently with MUSI 218a or b, Elementary Musicianship I or MUSI 219a or b, Elementary Musicianship II. Admision by the Music Theory Placement Test. To be followed by MUSI 211a or b.

MUSI 211, Elementary Studies in Analysis & Composition II

Continuation of MUSI 210a or b. Investigation of further applications in tonal harmony, counterpoint, and composition through exercises in analysis, motivic development, phrase rhythm, texture, form, performance, and model composition. Recommended to be taken concurrently with MUSI 218a or b, Elementary Musicianship I or MUSI 219a or b, Elementary Musicianship II. Admission after MUSI 210a or b or by the Music Theory Placement Test.

MUSI 218, Elementary Musicianship I

Exercises in melodic and harmonic dictation, sight-singing, keyboard harmony, and aural analysis. Recommended to be taken concurrently with MUSI 210 or 211. MUSI 219, Elementary Musicianship II. Continuation of MUSI 218. Prerequisite: MUSI 218. Recommended to be taken concurrently with MUSI 210 or 211. Admission after MUSI 218a or b or by the Music Theory Placement Test.
