Tutoring Resources

Tutoring

Yale offers many opportunities for tutoring (also known as “coaching”). Why the different nomenclature?  Both tutoring and coaching imply private teaching or instruction, but some may perceive “tutoring” as addressing a deficiency, whereas “coaching” might instead be seen as building on pre-existing strengths.  A minor difference, to be sure, but perhaps an important one as well.

Resident Writing Tutor: Each residential college has a Writing Tutor with an office in the college and regular office hours posted under Tutoring on the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning website.  You may use the “Make an Appointment with Your College Tutor” link to schedule an appointment.  Yale College students may seek the help and advice of any writing tutor in any residential college.

Writing Partners at the Writing Center: Drop-in tutoring with writing partners is available during afternoon and evening hours.  See the hours at http://www.yale.edu/writing. Writing Partners are undergraduate or graduate students selected both for their writing skills and for their ability to talk about writing. Writing partners do not read papers before the appointment, so they will often focus on the beginning of a your text or other short sections that the you know need help. Still, since many writing problems show up in the first two pages of a paper, this kind of tutoring can be very effective.

Resident Math/Science Tutor: Each residential college has a Resident Math/Science Tutor with an office in the college and regular office hours. The schedules, department and other specialties of all the residential college math and science tutors are posted on the Math/Science Tutor site, at www.yale.edu/mstutor.   Any student may seek help from the Resident Math/Science tutor in any residential colleges.

Tutoring in Foreign Languages:  The process for asking for a foreign language tutor is described on the Center for Language Study web site, at http://cls.yale.edu/foreign-language-tutoring.  A tutor is available to anyone enrolled in a foreign language (regardless of the grade or anticipated grade in that course).

Individually Assigned Tutors for QR and Science Courses:  This tutoring, like those described above, is also free of charge.  The form to request a tutor is available online at http://science.yalecollege.yale.edu/science-quantitative-reasoning-1.

Tutoring in Departments:  Some departments offer tutoring, individually or in groups.  You should check with your instructors or with your relevant Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Course-Based Peer Tutors:  Course-based peer tutor are sometimes available in QR or SC courses.  These tutors are provided in addition to other resources (such as the faculty member and teaching fellows) associated with the course. Course-based peer tutors are undergraduates who, in most cases, have previously taken the course.  They attend lectures and are available to students in the course for one-on-one and small-group tutoring. These tutors are overseen by the course instructor.
